Distinguished and Famous people from Isaac Region
🌟 Billy Sing
William “Billy” Sing was born in Clermont in 1886 to a Chinese father and an English mother. As a child he helped with the family market garden and deliveries, later gaining experience with horses and competitive shooting. He became a noted sniper during the First World War and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After returning to Australia, farming and prospecting did not bring lasting security. His Clermont connection encompasses childhood and later attempts to rebuild a civilian livelihood, giving the military story an important local and human setting.
🏭 Sir Gordon Jackson
Sir Gordon Jackson’s career connects with the Isaac region through Hail Creek. Under his leadership, CSR secured a stake in a major coking-coal project there during the latter half of the 1970s. The investment formed part of the company’s expansion from sugar into minerals and energy. In 1980, Jackson also oversaw its $460 million takeover of Thiess Holdings, whose work included coal operations in the Bowen Basin. Born in Brisbane, he had risen from a clerk’s job to lead CSR; his local connection is the Hail Creek investment rather than a claim that he lived in the district.
